ROLL ROTATION unit

The Roll Rotation Unit has a fabricated bed, that collects the Dielectric fluid and holds it in a small storage tank. The dielectric, stored in the storage tank, is pumped to the filter elements to be cleaned and then stored in the Dielectric tank.

The Control Electrics and Electronics are housed in the air-conditioned Headstock enclosure. This layout allows the SMS Smart EDT to have a very simple foundation. It also helps with the installation of the EDT System.

The Roll Rotation unit has a fully enclosed work chamber. The guards are interlocked to the EDT System and Fire System to ensure safe operation.

The work chamber guarding is fitted with windows so the Operator can monitor the EDT process.

The main elements of the Roll Rotation Unit are : -

HEADSTOCK

• Powered by the Siemens AC spindle motor, the spindle speed is set via the CNC controller and is selectable between 1.5 to 30 rpm.

• The Headstock is fitted with a catch plate and drive dogs to assist with the roll loading / unloading procedure.

• Number 6 Morse taper centre is fitted to the headstock to aid with the roll loading / unloading procedure.

• A Jog station is available, to allow easy control of the headstock during loading and unloading the roll, from either side of the machine.

• There are two options for the Headstock – Fixed or Traversing. The Fixed Headstock is provided as standard. The Headstock is clamped to a fix position on the Hardened Rails.

• The Traversing Headstock (optional) is clamped / unclamped using Hydraulic clamps. The Headstock is positioned along the Hardened bedways using an AC 3 phase geared motor and a rack and pinion drive.

SADDLE

• The Saddle is mounted on linear rails, it is moved by a Siemens Servo motor, via a precision ballscrew.

• The Texturing Head Assembly is mounted on the saddle.

• A cable chain is connected to the saddle, this provides all the services to the Texturing Head Assembly – EDT cables, Servo control and dielectric fluid.

STEADIES

• Two Steady rests are provided with the SMS Smart EDT system. The Steadies are used to support the work rolls during the texturing process.

• The Steady pads, which are in contact with the roll journals, are made from a soft metal – “white metal”.

MANUAL STEADY

MOTORIZED STEADY (OPTIONAL)

• As standard, a pair of Manual Steady rests are provided. The Manual Steady rest is position along the Hardened Bedway via manually driven rack and pinion drive.

• The Manual Steady is manually clamped and unclamped to the hardened bedways.

• The Automatic Steady rests (Optional) clamp to the Hardened bedways with hydraulic clamps.

• The Automatic Steady rests are positioned along the hardened bedways using a AC 3 phase geared motor via a rack and pinion drive.

• The steady arms, which hold the roll, are positioned by a hydraulic cylinder, which automatically centres the roll and locks it in position.

TAILSTOCK

• The SMS Smart EDT Tailstock is a heavy-duty tailstock, fitted with a quill and rotating number 6 Morse taper centre to aid with the roll loading / unloading procedure.

• The quill is hydraulically controlled and the hydraulic pressure can be altered for different roll weights.

• The tailstock is positioned along the hardened bedways using a AC 3 phase geared motor via a rack and pinion drive.

• The tailstock is clamped to the hardened bedways with hydraulic clamps.

• A push button station is available outside of the work chamber for the Operator to jog the tailstock assembly and the quill.

HYDRAULIC PACK

• The Hydraulic Pack provides all necessary hydraulic fluid and control for the tailstock operation and (if fitted) the automatic Steady operation.

• The Hydraulic Pack has a number of sensors – temperature, level switch and pressure sensor – which the CNC uses to monitor the hydraulic pack.
