OVERVIEW
SMS Technical Services have operated EDT machines since the mid 1980’ s. SMS Technical Services have provided Textured, Textured and Chrome and Chrome Only rolls to a number of steel companies throughout the North of America.
From their experience and their knowledge SMS Technical Services have developed the new SMS Smart EDT System.
EDT System supplied to Essar (Indonesia)
One (1) Texturing Head, with Twelve (12) Servos.
(2016 being upgraded to 24 Electrode)
The SMS Smart EDT system is based on the Traversing Texturing Head assembly. The system has one (1) Texturing Head; the head assembly houses the servo modules, which carry the electrodes. Each servo module controls the movement of their corresponding electrode, using the advanced servo control system developed by SMS Technical Services. The Texturing Head Assembly traverses (scans) the full length of the roll barrel, thereby ensuring a consistent and uniformed surface finish. With this unique scanning feature, the SMS Smart EDT system can easily texture varying lengths and varying diameter rolls.
The individual servo control allows the system to also texture crowned and tapered rolls, as well as being able to cope with roll eccentricity, chatter and pressure lines. Another feature of the individual servo control and scanning process of the Texturing Head Assembly allows the SMS Smart EDT system to perform barrel edge texturing. As each electrode (servo) reaches the end of the barrel, it is retracted and locked in position, this continues for each servo in the column, and for the number of columns selected by the operator. As the next pass begins, the operation works in reverse – as each electrode (servo) comes back onto the barrel, it is unlocked and theelectrode (servo) begins to texture again. This procedure ensures a uniformed surface texture from end to end of the barrel.
The Texturing Head Assembly is supplied with dielectric to the flushing manifold and to the centre of each electrode. The SMS Smart EDT system uses a special flushing manifold, which ensures the dielectric oil is supplied to the tip of each electrode. The manifold also ensures there is a consistent level of dielectric around the electrode tip during the texturing process. The dielectric oil is filtered, cooled and recirculated using the SMS Dielectric filter system. The filtration system helps to ensure that there is minimal degradation of the dielectric oil as each roll is textured, which ensures consistency of the roll surface.
The SMS Smart EDT system incorporates a fire protection system. The fire protection system is standalone, which monitors the work chamber, dielectric system and the electrical controls. If activated the fire protection system will sound an audible alarm, shut down the SMS Smart EDT system and if required will release C02 into the required zone (work chamber, dielectric tank or electric room).
The work chamber is fully guarded and is monitored by the fire protection system. Part of the work chamber is the fume extraction unit. This unit ensures the air quality expelled from the work chamber is within pollution guidelines. The SMS Smart EDT system is among the safest available, the work chamber is total enclosed during the texturing process.
The SMS Smart control console provides full control of the texturing process. A wide choice of surface finishes from 0.5μm to 10.0μm Ra is available. The SMS Smart power Electronics supply the special electric energy waveform for efficient texturing.
Another example of an EDT system supplied by SMS Smart and installed in Sumitomo Metal Industries in Kashima, Japan.
The system is 100 channels, fully automated.
